About

Joe Cohen works with mixed materials including fabric, textiles, metal and found objects to create sculptures and paintings that explore relationships to the sacred. The fabric focus is an ode to the original industries of his grandparents as Jewish refugees. The work is often rooted in a historical or spiritual context, whereby patriarchal narratives are unravelled through a re-imagining of ritualistic objects and images. He also works in video, drawing from his background as a documentary filmmaker.

Joe has produced and directed award winning documentaries, dance, and commercial videos, including artist portraits such as Ugo Rondinone for Eva Presenhuber Gallery, and exhibition promos for MoMA. His films include exclusives for i-D magazine and F***ing Young!, and a triptych video installation with the renowned choreographer Michael Clark, which screened at the Serpentine Gallery, the Barbican, Corso Como Milan, Centre Pompidou and the National Museum of Scotland.

In October 2023, he presented his first solo installation, Tassel on Tassel, in the iconic underground art garden space, Le Petit Versailles, in the Lower East Side, NYC.
